No. 7 N.C. State rallies late to tie match against No. 11 NU, then wins on criteria
No. 7 North Carolina State made a late charge in its wrestling dual against 11th-ranked Nebraska, winning 18-17, by criteria, Sunday in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Huskers were aiming for weekend sweep in the state after defeating No. 12 North Carolina on Saturday, and held a 17-9 lead entering the final two matches.
But the Wolfpack’s Sean Fausz defeated Zeke Moisey 8-2 at 125 pounds, and Tariq Wilson, ranked No. 4 at 133, earned a technical fall win against Tucker Sjomeling, which tied the match at 17-17.
N.C. State was awarded the tiebreaking point based on total points (56-43).
Both Husker (5-2) defeats this season have come via criteria. Wisconsin also defeated NU by criteria, 22-21 on Nov. 16.
Nebraska started strong Sunday, getting wins from Chad Red (141 pounds), Tyler Berger (157) and Isaiah White (165).
Berger, ranked fifth, defeated fourth-ranked Hayden Hidlay 5-2. Berger trailed 1-0 entering the final period, but got late takedowns to earn the win. Hidley defeated Berger twice last season.
White earned his seventh straight win, defeating 18th-ranked Thomas Bullard 13-3.
NU’s Mikey Labriola followed with a 13-4 win against N.C. State’s Daniel Bullard at 174 pounds to improve to 13-2.
N.C. State (6-0) then won four of the final five matches to complete the rally. The lone Husker win in that stretch came from heavyweight David Jensen.
Zemua Baptista, a Friend graduate, made his Husker debut. He lost to No. 4 Justin Oliver 8-2 at 149 pounds.
