Names In The Game
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) _ Phil Simms is proclaimed as the ″the best New York Giant″ in the July edition of a magazine that went to press the day the team released the 38- year-old quarterback.
Simms was featured on the cover of ″New Jersey Monthly,″ and called the ″the last of the true-blue Giants″ in a section titled ″The Best (and Worst) The State Has to Offer.″
″It couldn’t be worse for the magazine,″ editor Jenny DeMonte said Wednesday. ″First, because we are all fans of his. Second, because of the cover. ... I ran to production but was too late. We would have had to print the entire issue over.″
PHOENIX (AP) - Lloyd Botimer, a World War I veteran who turned 99 on Nov. 29, will throw the javelin Saturday in the Grand Canyon State Games.
″I’ve seized the opportunity to pay tribute to my comrades,″ Botimer said Wednesday. ″I never thought about living to 100. Of course, in the war, I wondered if I’d ever get home.
″Everywhere I go, people are younger. All my brothers and sisters, and all their spouses have been gone for years. But you don’t want to think about that. You just associate with younger people.″
He’ll compete in the 90-and-over Master’s Division.
HOUSTON (AP) - Shannon Teeters Presley is scheduled to join husband Matt Presley in the Houston Hotshots’ lineup for Friday night’s Continental Indoor Soccer League game with the Carolina Vipers.
The former college star at Virginia was cleared to play Wednesday by team internist Dr. Mike Feltovic after treatment for a bronchial infection.
MONTREAL (AP) - Booing or not, the Montreal Expos will play ″O Canada″ during Quebec’s Fete nationale holiday at Olympic Stadium.
Expos president Claude Brochu had said earlier this week that the team might skip the Canadian and U.S. anthems before Friday’s game with Florida. ---
NEW YORK (AP) - Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero Jr. and current riders Julie Krone and Eddie Maple were honored by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation for their longtime contributions to the organization.
