Iowa Rep. King sees tough challenge from fellow conservative
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican Rep. Steve King likes to note that President Donald Trump referred to him as “the world’s most conservative human being,” but the Iowa congressman is bracing for what could be his toughest campaign since taking office 16 years ago.
The challenge isn’t from a Democrat, but from a conservative state legislator who announced he’d seek the Republican nomination in the sprawling 4th District. State Sen. Randy Feenstra says voters need an effective leader rather than “more sideshows and distractions.”
King responded that Feenstra’s challenge was “fueled by establishment puppeteers.” Feenstra has been elected three times in a state Senate district whose voters comprise roughly 20 percent of the congressional district.
Feenstra has a solid conservative record of opposing abortion rights, supporting gun rights and cutting taxes.
