Trump: ‘We will build a human wall if necessary’ at southern border
President Trump warned Tuesday that he’d be willing to send more troops to the border for a “human wall,” should the funding fall through for his border wall.
“Tremendous numbers of people are coming up through Mexico in the hopes of flooding our Southern Border,” Trump tweeted. “We have sent additional military. We will build a Human Wall if necessary. If we had a real Wall, this would be a non-event!”
The Pentagon announced Sunday it has sent 3,750 additional troops down to the U.S.-Mexico border to help lay more miles of razor wire on top of existing fencing.
The president’s comments come just hours before he is set to give his State of the Union address, in which he plans to emphasize unity.
Congressional negotiators are working to reach a compromise on funding for the border wall and security. They have until Feb. 15 to reach a deal and avert another partial government shutdown.
The Trump administration has been preparing to declare a national crisis so that the president could use emergency powers to circumvent Congress, should a deal not include funds for the wall.
