Lawmakers consider proposal to support Green New Deal study
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island lawmakers are considering resolutions to release the findings of a study on the state impact of the national Green New Deal.
The resolutions would support the Rhode Island Green New Deal Research Council as it studies the social and economic impact of the national proposal.
Research council project manager Michael Roles says they hope to have a report ready for legislators by May 15.
Their work is being funded by the Climate and Development Lab at Brown University.
The Green New Deal introduced by Democratic U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Democratic U.S. Sen. Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts calls for decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, meeting power demand using clean and renewable energy sources and upgrading buildings to be energy-efficient.
