North Carolina native opens new skin care business
GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) — Despite being one of the most important organs of the human body, the skin is arguably one of the least respected.
Between taking all-around abuse from ultraviolet rays, to being subjected to hard physical labor via the hands and feet, the average person’s skin absorbs more than its share of abuse.
Shawna Banks is well aware of that. But she still finds herself fighting the impression many people have that skin care can or should be an afterthought.
“Skin care isn’t just about luxury,” said Banks, who recently opened a new business called In Depth Skin in Gastonia. “There was a stigma for a long time that it was always about relaxation. But it’s not really about that anymore.”
The clinic is located in the New Hope Small Business Center at 3816 S. New Hope Road, Suite 22. Banks’ aim with the venture is to let people know it’s not only OK to put some effort into skin care, but also a practice that will reap rewards.
“It’s scientifically proven to be effective at preventing aging and clearing problematic skin,” she said of the treatments she offers.
Banks is a native of Belmont who graduated from South Point High School and now lives in Gastonia. She worked in the medical industry for years alongside acupuncturists, chiropractors and naturopaths.
“So I fell right into skin care and wanting to help people, especially those who are self-conscious about things like acne,” she said.
She has since earned credentials from the Academy of Esthetics in Charlotte and became a licensed esthetician in 2016. She is also a member of the Associated Skin Care Professionals and a certified acne specialist through Face Reality.
In Depth Skin offers a variety of treatments and products aimed at keeping skin healthy. A VIP membership program is also available that provides monthly savings as an incentive for people to stay on top of their skin care.
The business is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Banks said she has been pleasantly surprised at how things have gone since she opened her doors, as she has gotten a number of client referrals.
“I actually have done better than anticipated, which is a great thing,” she said. “I’m still working to get the word out.”
