Oklahoma Senate GOP outlines agenda similar to Stitt’s
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Republicans in the Oklahoma Senate are outlining an agenda that’s similar to that of new GOP Gov. Kevin Stitt, including expanding the governor’s power and reducing the state’s prison population.
New Senate President Pro Tem Greg Treat on Tuesday unveiled the priorities of Republicans, who enjoy a 39-9 edge over Democrats in the Senate.
Treat says the Senate is agreeable to Stitt’s request for the power to hire and fire the directors of the state’s largest agencies. Senate Republicans also want to incentivize public schools to return to five-day school weeks and create a new state office under legislative control to oversee state agencies.
Senate Republicans also want to fund programs to divert criminals from prison and overhaul the bail system to help reduce the state’s prison population.
