Lunenburg Farm Owner, Daughter Rescue 13 Cows Trapped When Grain Silo Falls on Barn
LUNENBURG -- A grain silo collapsed onto a barn at Cherry Hill Farm Sunday morning, trapping 13 calves inside and causing one cow to be euthanized from its injuries.
The silo fell backward onto the main barn with the farm’s lettering on it, spilling bales of hay and grain onto the property, said Lunenburg Police Sgt. Josh Tocci.
Just before the collapse, the farm’s owner and his daughter were inside the barn and heard the metal straps surrounding the grain silo breaking, Tocci said. They got themselves and some animals out safely before the silo fell onto the barn, he said.
The collapse happened at about 10:50 a.m. at the Leominster Road farm known for its ice cream, police said.
Thirteen calves were trapped in the front left corner of the barn.
One cow was injured by debris from the fall and was euthanized by the farm owners before Lunenburg police and fire arrived, Tocci said.
