NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City police sergeant killed a 44-year-old man who shot a woman and then refused to stop attacking the owner of the Harlem apartment they were in Wednesday night, Chief of Patrol Fausto Pichardo said.

Police had been responding to a report of shots fired when they found the 45-year-old woman on the ground of the fifth-floor apartment and the men fighting, one of them wielding a kitchen knife, Fausto said.

The man ignored officers orders to drop the knife and was shot in the torso as he attempted to stab the 39-year old man, he said.

Medical personnel pronounced the woman and the man shot by an officer dead at the scene.
