THOMAS TASCHINGER: Megyn Kelly must expose Alex Jones
Like a lot of people, I will be watching Megyn Kelly’s interview tonight on NBC with Alex Jones. And since none of us have seen it yet, we can’t judge whether it give free publicity to a crank or reveals him as the horrible person he is.
But based on what I’ve read so far, she will serve like a squirt of bleach on a patch of fungus. If that’s how it plays out tonight, Kelly will have done our republic a favor.
If you are unaware of this character, you’re not missing much. Unfortunately, not enough Americans are missing him.
His radio show and website InfoWars.com are disturbing popular. Millions of people - yes, millions - follow this creep. Advertisers who plug stuff like “Super Male Vitality” on his website have made him rich. The whole circus is disgusting.
Why? Because Jones is a far-right loon who peddles bizarre conspiracy theories that would make Oliver Stone blush.
The list includes whoppers like Clinton aide Vince Foster was murdered, 9/11 was an inside job, President Obama was born in Kenya, Hillary Clinton was running a sex trafficking ring out of a pizza parlor in Washington and the Chobani yogurt company was hiring “migrant rapists” who spread tuberculosis.
Pretty sick, huh? But wait, there’s more.
His most famous and absurd lie is that the Newtown massacre was a hoax that was staged - yes, staged! - by government actors with “green screens” to drum up support for gun control.
All of this is sick beyond description. And if Jones was just a clown ranting at the end of the bar, we could ignore him. But the longer he spews his garbage, the more listeners he attracts and the more semi-respectable he seems.
Incredibly, President Trump granted credentials for his site to attend White House briefings. Trump even did an interview with Jones in 2015 and praised his “amazing” reputation.
That’s as bad as anything Jones has said, and it shows why he must finally be exposed and rejected by all Americans of all beliefs. Kelly’s interview, where she hammers him on his Newtown claims, can help do that.
We can disagree about tax cuts or health care policy, but we can’t tolerate someone like this. And don’t be fooled by his recent diversion that he’s just asking questions about Newtown or 9/11 which listeners can decide for themselves. He is actively promoting the worst kind of political hatred, and he’s not going away.
Maybe if his supporters see a real journalist like Kelly prying the manhole cover off his sewer, they will realize how worthless he is. Exposure like this can also ensure that his audience starts dwindling instead of growing.
There will always be people like Alex Jones. And in a democracy, they have the right to say vile things. But they belong in the fringe, not the mainstream.
It’s time Jones was flushed there. I hope Megyn Kelly grabs the toilet handle tonight and depresses it forcefully.
