After accident, big delays on the Merritt Parkway

There are big delays on the southbound Merritt Parkway after a two-vehicle accident.

The accident closed the left lane between Exits 44 in Fairfield and 42 in Westport for more than 40 minutes.

Although the lane reopened around 6 50 a.m., it;s stuill causing heavy southbound delays.

At 6:45 a.m., the state Department of Transportation says it’s taking 70 minutes to drive between Route 8 in Trumbull to Route 7 in Norwalk.

By 7 a.m., the travel time has shortened to 54 minutes.

By 7:15 a.m., speeds had increased to around 30 mph; the normal speeds for a typical southbound traffic this time of day.

Without traffic or accidents, that 17-mile distance would take 20 minutes.

Speeds are in the single numbers near the accident scene.

The average speed on the parkway is 15 mph.

No word yet whether there are any injuries.
