Hundreds Flock To Fundraiser For Late Supermarket Manager
SCRANTON — Friends and family of John “Jack” Archer planned a fundraiser to defray costs of his pancreatic cancer diagnosis, but he never lived to see it happen.
Archer, 64, of Scranton had been sick with pancreatic cancer for just 10 weeks before he died Sept. 14.
The March for Arch event Sunday at Waldorf Park Social Club was filled with laughter and fond memories of Archer, who was the store manager at Gerrity’s Supermarkets on Meadow Avenue for 22 years. An estimated 800 people attended and paid the $20 admission donation, said fundraiser committee member Jason Blew.
Archer’s family anticipates a wash of medical bills, and money raised will be used to help pay them. The family also plans to donate money for cancer research.
