“Destroyer”: Nicole Kidman roughs it as an L.A. cop compelled to revisit an undercover case that nearly derailed her life and career years earlier. Director Karyn Kusama (“Girlfight”) steers Kidman along a path that could lead to salvation or just further ruin.

“On the Basis of Sex”: Because it focuses on a single early case, this Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic often feels like a pro-forma legal drama, culminating in a stirring last-minute argument that wins the day. Even as it plays up emotions and some family drama, the movie effectively depicts the obstacles Ginsburg (Felicity Jones, with a New York accent that comes and goes) had to overcome as a woman in a profession, and society, dominated by men. And it honors the intellectual groundwork she laid that would enable her to knock down some of those obstacles in a series of Supreme Court cases.
Also: “Holmes & Watson,” “Welcome to Marwen”
“The Haunting of Sharon Tate”: The appetite for true crime apparently can’t be sated. This take on the Manson Family murders looks like an indie horror film, with “Valley of the Dolls” star Tate (Hilary Duff) having premonitions of her tragic fate. It’s a cinematic grave robbery. Coincidentally, Sharon Tate also will be a main character in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
“Black Summer”: The appetite for zombies — ditto. A new series from the creators of Syfy’s “Z Nation” takes place at the start of a zombie outbreak, when nobody knows anything except they may become some dead guy’s snack if they don’t move now. Former model Jaime King (“Sin City”) stars as a mother searching for her daughter in the madness. (Season one premieres Thursday on Netflix.)
