A jury this morning sentenced a Mexican national to 50 years in prison for the sexually abusing a relative for years.

Valentin Torres Alvarez was convicted of one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child and two counts of prohibited sexual contact by a jury in 103rd state District court.

Torres is from Matamoros, but the Cameron County District Attorney’s office said the attacks took place in San Benito. He started abusing the young girl during the summer when she was 12 years old and continued discreetly continued the sexual abuse until July 2017.

That’s when the girl, who was then 18, and her mother reported the allegations to authorities. Officials say at least one family member suspected the abuse was taking place.

Brandy Bailey, the supervisor of the Cameron County Child Abuse Unit, says similar scenarios are common in abuse cases, especially those involving relatives.

“Since the inception of the Child Abuse Unit five years ago, statistics show more often than not, trusted family members are often the perpetrators. They take advantage of their position of influence and victims’ vulnerability and age to manipulate them and make them believe something bad will happen to their family, or themselves, if they speak up. “ said Bailey.

Bailey said 50 years is not enough time to serve for a sexual abuse crime committed against a child.
