Teen killed in shooting at Raleigh apartment complex
A 14-year-old died early Friday after being shot at an east Raleigh apartment complex, police said.
Officers responded to a reported shooting at the Milburnie Road Apartments, in the 900 block of Sawpit Drive, at about 11:40 p.m. Thursday.
They initially couldn’t locate any victims or witnesses, but they later found Jamahri Lucas in a parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to WakeMed, where he died.
Lucas was a seventh-grader at Longview School, Wake County Public School System officials said.
Police got a 911 call just before midnight from a resident who’s home had been hit by gunfire.
“We heard gunshots just out front of our house, and I think our house was hit,” the caller told a dispatcher.
One of the bullets went through a home where three people live. Willy Guess said he was lying in bed watching TV when he heard a loud noise.
A shot penetrated the wall over his bed and went right through his television into the next room, where his sister was.
“I thought I was going to die or something,” Guess said Friday. “It scared me, scared me really.”
Many people in the small apartment complex said they heard the shots.
“I just heard a lot of pow, pow, pow. It scared me. I got on the floor last night,” Angela Curley said.
Although residents said they were relieved that more people weren’t hurt, they were saddened by Lucas’ death.
“It’s sad I hate it for the mother. Rest in peace, Curley said.
Police are searching for a dark-colored, midsize sedan in connection with the shooting.
