SC plans $28M new US 301 Edisto River bridges in Orangeburg
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina officials have a proposal to replace a pair of bridges over the Edisto River near Orangeburg, one of which is nearly 100 years old.
The state Department of Transportation recently showed the $23 million plan to build new bridges on U.S. 301.
Program manager Adam Humphries tells The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg that one of the old bridges was built in 1922 and the other in 1964. He says they will have to be closed if they aren’t replaced soon.
About 26,000 vehicles a day use the bridges, which should remain open while the new spans are built.
Humphries says the demolition of the bridges will also remove the pilings currently in the river channel.
