Praise for Trump trade deal, scorn for Dr. Ford mockery: Darcy cartoon

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- President Trump deserves praise for delivering a trade deal with Mexico and Canada that is an improvement over the flawed NAFTA.  He deserves scorn for trading his respectful treatment of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford for mocking Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser at a campaign rally Tuesday evening.

With the completion of the  USMCA, President Trump has fulfilled another campaign promise to replace NAFTA, which earned him many votes in the 2016 presidential election.

Announcement of the agreement sent the stock market soaring and even earned praise from Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer.

“As someone who voted against NAFTA and opposed it for many years, I knew it needed fixing.  The president deserves praise for taking large steps to improve it.  However, any final agreement must be judged on how it benefits and protects middle-class families and the working people in our country.

Two areas where I particularly want to see the details are dairy, where our dairy farmers are being taken advantage of by Canada, and real enforcement of labor provisions,” said Schumer.

It will be difficult for the Democrats to oppose a trade deal that is an improvement over NAFTA with the midterms and 2020 presidential campaign approaching.   Democrat office holders in states that went to Trump, like Ohio’s  Senator Sherrod Brown, have long opposed NAFTA.

Democrats have to be careful about overplaying their hand with attacks on Trump.   While Trump was heavily criticized for bullying Canada and imposing tariffs as a negotiating tactics, he can now say his tactics worked to the benefit of American workers who are already seeing a strong economy.

Trump will take credit for the economic resurgence, even though it began under Obama.  But Trump can justifiably say he delivered on campaign promises he was elected on --getting rid of NAFTA, TPP, the Iran deal, and getting tough on immigration, for better or worse.

Trump may also be able to say he delivered on naming at least two Conservative Supreme Court Justices, that is  if he didn’t kill Kavanaugh’s teetering confirmation by needlessly mocking Dr. Christine Blasey Ford last night at a campaign rally.

‘Donald Did-Right’ on the new trade deal.  But he usually does wrong, as he proved once again by mocking Dr. Ford.
