Michael J. Beauford, 76, retired educator

Michael J. Beauford, a retired elementary school teacher, community servant and church elder, died on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017. He was 76.

He was born on Oct. 31, 1941 to the late Douglas A. Beauford and Eugenia Wells-Beauford in Philadelphia. He was educated in the Philadelphia public school system. Beauford graduated from Roman Catholic High School in 1963. He continued his educational journey at Cheyney University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1968. Beauford completed graduate courses at Temple University. In 1975, he graduated from American College where he completed graduate studies in life insurance.

Beauford worked many years with the School District of Philadelphia where he was an elementary school teacher. He retired in 2002. He also worked as an insurance agent with Equitable Life Insurance Company.

He served as a member of many professional organizations including the Beloved St. John Evangelistic Church’s Community Development Corporation, the Department of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation, Beloved St. John Evangelistic Church’s Executive Board, Philadelphia Corporation for the Aging’s Clergy Interfaith Coalition, Hannah’s House Inc. and Einstein Health Center Community House for Seniors.

Beauford was a committed community servant and he received many awards. State Sen. Shirley M. Kitchen presented him with a citation on May 29, 2009 for his exemplary citizenship and work in the community. He received a citation from City Councilwoman Cindy Bass on Sept. 27, 2014 for his tireless efforts and dedicated service to his community. Pastor Michael Robinson presented him with the Senior Citizen of the Year Award on Nov. 21, 2015 for his outstanding Servant Leaders in ministry and the community at large.

He met Brenda Lloyd in 1981 and they married on June 14, 1986.

Beauford accepted Christ at an early age. He joined Deliverance Evangelistic Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Benjamin Smith, and served there for approximately 16 years. He joined Beloved St. John Church Evangelistic Church in 1997 under the leadership of the Rev. Clement M. Lupton III. He served faithfully in ministry in many capacities including deacon, church coordinator, elder and community liaison.

Beauford enjoyed going to the movies. He also enjoyed collecting money for various events.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph Beauford, Philip Beauford and Douglas Beauford and grandson, Travon Beauford.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his children, Teresa Beauford of Philadelphia, Michael (Aisha) Beauford Jr. of Sicklerville, N.J., Terrence (Shannon) Beauford of Mount Holly, N.J., and Shawnekia Beauford of West Covina, Calif.; stepson, Sherman Mitchell of Philadelphia; siblings: Juanita E. of Philadelphia, Bernard Beauford of Philadelphia, Lucille Beauford of Philadelphia, Sister Mary Stephen of Baltimore, Thomas (Beverly) Beauford of Knoxville, Tenn., Charles (Mary) Beauford of Raleigh, N.C., and Jerome Beauford of Winston Salem, N.C.; grandchildren, Devon Beauford of Lansing, Mich., and Tevon Beauford of Lexington, Ken.; and other relatives and friends.

Services were held Saturday at Beloved St. John Evangelistic Church, 4541 N. Broad St. Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery.

G. Choice Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements.
