Baby cut from slain teen’s womb opens eyes for first time, family says
An infant cut from his mother’s womb in a gruesome crime last month reportedly opened his eyes briefly Sunday.
Nineteen-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez was nine months pregnant when she was killed and her unborn baby, a little boy, was cut from her belly.
The baby is in grave condition and on life support in the neo-natal intensive care unit, according to officials. On Sunday, friends of the family of Ochoa-Lopez released a photo of the baby and his father together.
Officials say a woman was selling baby clothes to Ochoa-Lopeza and lured her back to her house with an offer of more clothing.
The woman, Clarisa Figueroa, 46, was charged with murder after allegedly strangling the Ochoa-Lopez with a cord and cutting the infant from her womb.
Figueroa apparently wanted to raise another child two years after her adult son died of natural causes, investigators said.
“Words cannot express how disgusting and thoroughly disturbing these allegations are,” Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said at a news conference to announce the murder charges against Figueroa and her 24-year-old daughter, Desiree Figueroa. The mother’s boyfriend, 40-year-old Piotr Bobak, was charged with concealment of a homicide.
There will be three days of visitation for Ochoa-Lopez on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Her funeral will be held Saturday in Stickney, Illinois.
