Student in hospice care receives high school diploma

March 28, 2019

AUBURN, Maine (AP) — A Maine student has received his high school diploma during a special graduation ceremony at his bed in hospice care.

Eighteen-year-old Ethan Lussier is currently at the Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn and studied at Lewiston High School. The Sun Journal reports his mother Vicki Saunders says Lussier was aware he received his diploma and says it is meaningful to him and his family.

Lussier was moved to hospice care in March after he suffered a seizure last year and his condition worsened.

Saunders says Jordyn Cunningham, Lussier’s friend and a high school student, requested the special graduation for him.

Superintendent Bill Webster, Assistant Superintendent Shawn Chabot, Lewiston High School Assistant Principal Jay Dufour and Lussier’s family were all present for the ceremony Tuesday.
