Local Girl Scout Troop hosts raffle to increase adoptions at Animal Shelter

February 14, 2019 GMT

POCATELLO - Silver Sage Girl Scout Troop 178 hopes this February will be your chance to find a new furry valentine to love from the Pocatello Animal Shelter.

As part of their troop’s continual efforts to serve the community in various ways, the scouts decided to focus their energy on a shared interest – animals!

The troop made its way to the Pocatello Animal Shelter in November 2018 to find out how to help.

After taking a tour, the girls learned that adoptions were lowest in the early spring months. They decided they wanted to help increase interest in pet adoptions by providing extra incentives to would-be pet owners.

During the month of February, anyone who adopts a dog or cat from the shelter will be entered to win a drawing for a pet care package. The packages were put together by the girl scouts from donations and purchased supplies.

Donations came from troop parents, local individuals and other non-profit groups. The troop then purchased some of the supplies from their troop fund which comes from cookie sales.

Each package contains items needed for pet owners in excess of $100. The dog package contains such items as a large double cushion dog bed, stainless steel dog bowls (2), 50 punds of Kirkland dog food, 5 pound box of dog treats, rope toys, vinyl dog collar, dog shampoo and more. The cat package contains a large bag of indoor cat food, cat tree, litter box with 35 pounds of litter, cat treats, cat toys, collar and more. The troop will choose one dog adoptee and one cat adoptee randomly at the end of the month.

This is just one example of how girl scouts can improve their communities through service and that often, the service is funded by the proceeds troops make from the sale of Girl Scout Cookies. Cookie season 2019 has already started and soon these girls will be near the entrance of local stores, hoping to sell not just a box of cookies but the opportunity to continue reinvesting in their community.
