Thunder Bay sanctuary gets $50K award for support campaign
ALPENA, Mich. (AP) — A sustainable tourism program devised by Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary is receiving a $50,000 award.
The organization was recognized for its “Get Into Your Sanctuary” campaign designed to boost public support of the marine sanctuary in Lake Huron.
The grant is among five Ernest F. Hollings Ocean Awareness Awards given nationwide by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. They recognize efforts to protect ocean and Great Lakes coastal areas.
Hollings is a former U.S. senator from South Carolina who sponsored numerous coastal protection laws.
Marine and Great Lakes sanctuaries are sensitive areas protected for their ecological and cultural significance.
