SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A man was shot and killed by a Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy following a short pursuit that ended in the backyard of a north Spokane home, authorities said.

At about 3:50 a.m. Friday a deputy attempted to perform a traffic stop on a vehicle but the driver didn’t stop and it turned into a pursuit, the sheriff’s office said.

After a couple blocks, the driver’s vehicle crashed into a fence and the driver exited and advanced toward the deputy, said the sheriff’s spokesman Cpl. Mark Gregory.

The deputy first attempted to deploy his Taser, but it didn’t work, Gregory said.

The sheriff’s office said the man then fled on foot briefly before before confronting the deputy again. The deputy fired after the man refused to obey the deputy’s commands and reached for the pocket or waistband of his pants, according to the sheriff’s office.

Medics pronounced him dead. Gregory said the investigation into the deputy-involved shooting will be done by the Spokane Police Department as part of the Spokane Investigative Regional Response or SIRR team.

The sheriff’s office will name the deputy who fired the fatal shot at a later time. The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office at some point will release the name of the man who was shot, Gregory said.
