Drowning reported at Little River Canyon National Preserve

FORT PAYNE, Ala. – Around 1:45 p.m. Friday, a park visitor drowned at Little River Falls at Little River Canyon National Preserve. The body was recovered at approximately 2:40 p.m. by Fischer Rescue Squad and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Trooper.

An 18 year-old male from Adairsville, Ga. was swimming with friends when the incident occurred. Bystanders called 911 and National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Rangers responded to the scene, working in cooperation with several agencies, including DeKalb and Cherokee County Emergency Management Agencies, Adamsburg Volunteer Fire Department, Fort Payne Fire Department, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Fischer Rescue Squad, DeKalb Ambulance Service, and Cherokee EMS. Rescuers were able to locate the victim near the center of the basin at the bottom of the falls.

The incident remains under investigation.
