Athletes file lawsuit against police over arrests
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A Marshall University football player, a former soccer player and a relative of the soccer player have filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Huntington and five police officers alleging civil rights violations when they were arrested last year.
The Herald-Dispatch reports that Marshall University football offensive lineman Nathaniel Charles Devers, former Marshall soccer player Cory Joseph Shimensky and a relative, Stephen Shimensky, filed a suit alleging excessive force, unlawful search and false arrest.
Police say they asked the men to leave a restaurant after responding to a call of a disturbance and arrested them when they refused. The men say they were physically attacked by police.
The newspaper quoted Huntington City Attorney Scott Damron as saying Tuesday that the city hadn’t received a copy of the complaint and couldn’t comment.
