Ex-teacher avoids jail for sending intimate photos to teen
CLINTON, Mass. (AP) — A former Massachusetts high school teacher has avoided jail but must register as a sex offender for sending intimate images of herself to one of her 15-year-old students.
Former Nashoba Regional High School math teacher Dorothy Bancroft Veracka was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to distributing obscene matter to a minor, Masslive.com reported. Charges of possessing child pornography and posing or exhibiting a child in the state of nudity were dismissed.
Veracka was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in jail, but the sentence was suspended for two years with probation.
The teacher sent nude photos of herself to the boy between September 2018 and March 2019, according to court records. The boy also told police Veracka solicited nude photos from him, according to authorities. The teen sent one photo and then stopped.
Defense attorney Frank McNamara said his client’s poor decisions were fueled by alcohol, late-night messaging and compulsive behavior. He said there was no physical contact between Veracka and the student.
The school in Bolton fired Veracka after her arrest in October.
