Woman robbed, assaulted at Detroit Opera House garage

Detroit police are seeking tips to find a man wanted in connection with an armed robbery and attempted sexual assault at a downtown parking garage.

A woman told authorities the suspect followed her inside the Detroit Opera House structure in the 1400 block of Broadway at about 11:15 p.m. Monday, approached then took the 61 year old’s money.

“The suspect then told the victim to get into the back seat, in which she complied, believing him to be armed after seeing an object in his hand,” investigators said in a statement. “Once inside the vehicle, the suspect physically assaulted her then attempted to sexually assault her.”

The woman fought off the suspect, who fled, and alerted security.

In a statement Tuesday, Michigan Opera Theatre representatives said they were “deeply troubled” by the incident.

“The safety of those who use our facilities is of the utmost importance to us at Michigan Opera Theatre. Our parking garage has 24-hour on-site security and surveillance, and we regularly review our security measures,” the release read. “We have been in the process of employing an expanded video surveillance system, which will be fully implemented within the next few weeks. We are conducting a thorough investigation of the incident to determine any further security improvements that should be made. We express our heartfelt concern to the individual that was harmed in the incident.”

Police on Tuesday released surveillance footage of the suspect, who is described as an African-American man, 6 feet tall, 250 to 300 pounds, with a medium brown complexion. He was last seen wearing a brown scarf, black coat and hooded sweatshirt with dark pants and shoes.
