Phone scam targeting sex offenders

May 16, 2018 GMT

MADISON - The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a recent phone scam.

According to Jon Downey, sex offenders in the area are being called by individuals identifying themselves as Lieutenant Mike Peterson or Sergeant Jason Cooke from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

The individuals then state there’s a warrant out for that person’s arrest and demand iTunes or prepaid Visa gift cads to avoid being taken into custody.

Downey says the caller I.D. number that pops up is 402-644-1944, if there’s no answer they may leave a message asking you to call back for extension 4.

If you receive a call from that number, or any other call you believe is suspicious contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
