Runner in fitness group struck and killed by vehicle
LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a 36-year-old woman running with her fitness club has been struck and killed by a vehicle.
South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. David Jones says the woman was struck as she crossed U.S. Highway 1 near Lexington High School in a crosswalk around 5:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher says Dianne Wells died at the scene.
Authorities say the driver stopped and tried to help Wells. Jones says the wreck is still under investigation.
Lexington fitness group FiA posted on Twitter that Wells was a member, was wearing safety lights and running on the group’s typical route.
Authorities say no one else was in the crosswalk when Wells was hit.
