Four hurt in fiery crash east of Raleigh

May 28, 2019 GMT

Four people were injured Tuesday in a fiery crash that closed eastbound lanes of New Bern Avenue between Raleigh and Knightdale for five hours.

Police said a westbound Camry was speeding shortly after noon when the driver lost control and overcorrected, causing the car to cross the median and collide head-on with an eastbound Chevrolet Equinox just east of Rogers Lane.

The impact pushed the Equinox into the right lane, where it struck a Toyota Sienna, before slamming into a guardrail, police said.

The Camry caught fire after the collision, but firefighters were able to quickly put the blaze out.

Three teens in the Camry and the driver of the Equinox were taken to WakeMed for treatment, with the Camry driver suffering the most serious injuries, police said.

None of the four people in the Sienna were hurt.

The identities of the victims and their conditions weren’t released as of Tuesday evening.

Sky 5 video showed long traffic backups on U.S. Highway 64 Business following the crash. Debris and glass covered the eastbound lanes, and more than a dozen emergency vehicles had responded.

Eastbound traffic was rerouted to New Hope Road, the Knightdale Bypass and Interstate 540 until about 5 p.m., when the road reopened.

One westbound lane also was closed between Rogers Lane and Old Milburnie Road for about four hours before reopening at about 4 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
