MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama country singer Dexter Roberts has come in third place on Season 16 of NBC’s “The Voice.”

Roberts competed on celebrity country crooner Blake Shelton’s team during the reality series, Al.com reported. The 27-year-old from Fayette was beat out for the top spot by Maelyn Jarmon, a 26-year-old pop singer from Frisco, Texas.

“It’s so overwhelming, man,” Roberts said during the show. “I come from a small, small town. Things like this don’t happen to people like me.”

During Monday night’s episode, Shelton praised Roberts’ talent and work ethic.

“You’re always classy. You always do your job. Literally, like the next George Strait standing up there,” Shelton said.

Roberts may be familiar to fans of reality TV. He took seventh place on “American Idol” in 2014, earning a widespread fan base in the process.

As a top-10 contestant on “American Idol,” Roberts joined a summer tour before having to leave due to illness. He was bitten by a tick while hunting and contracted Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

On “The Voice” this season he said he thought his career might have been over when his health was failing and his momentum seemed to stall. He regards his time on the show as a blessing, and a surreal one at that.

All four celebrity judges — Shelton, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine — praised Roberts’ performances.

“At the end of the day, greatness is greatness. And you have it in spades, my friend,” said Maroon 5 frontman Levine.

Roberts is the third contestant from Alabama to make the finals on “The Voice.”

Kirk Jay, a country-soul singer from Montgomery, and Red Marlow, a country singer from Rogersville, had previously made it to top-five spots.
