Commissioners to proceed with jail renovations
The Commissioners’ Court will consider moving forward on a project that would expand the booking and intake area at the Ector County Law Enforcement Center.
The meeting is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the commissioners’ courtroom, Room 120, located in the Ector County Administration building annex, 1010 E. Eighth St.
A renovated booking and intake area was deemed one of county officials’ top wish-list items for the jail and was approved by commissioners at a cost of $590,160 during a meeting last year.
“It has not been renovated or anything since it was originally built (in the mid-1990s) and there’s more and more inmates coming in to the facility,” Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis said.
Ector County Commissioners on Tuesday will consider approving a JSA Architects’ fee of $129,400 to design construction documents to expand booking and intake at the ECLEC.
Griffis said the goal of the expansion would be to expedite the process for officers bringing arrestees in and get them back on the street in a shorter amount of time.
“I believe our plan will be to hire more civilian employees to take care of those booking and intake processes,” Griffis said.
Ector County Building Maintenance Director Charlie Pierce said the renovation would not impact other jail addition and renovation projects taking place, but would likely be one of the last items completed.
“The rest of jail can be finished and used while this is going on,” Pierce said.
The jail addition project includes adding a 60,000 square foot building at the ECLEC with 412 beds, bringing the total number of beds at the jail to 1,019. Construction began in February 2018 and the project is anticipated to be completed this October.
County commissioners previously approved an expansion to the jail to be paid for by a $25 million debt issuance and Pierce said the booking and intake area renovation utilizes that same funding.
