BYU Women’s Volleyball: No. 9 Cougars finish regular season vs. LMU
Three BYU seniors – Cosy Burnett, Alohi Robins-Hardy and Madeline Graham – will play their last regular-season home game for the Cougars on Tuesday.
BYU (27-2 overall, 16-1 WCC) will close out the regular season with a match against Loyola Marymount at the Smith Fieldhouse. The Cougars are tied with San Diego for the West Coast Conference lead and a win would guarantee at least a tie for the title.
BYU has bigger goals, of course, and with a No. 9 ranking will be a shoe-in for a spot in the NCAA Tournament, which begins November 30. The NCAA selection show is Sunday, and the Cougars should at least host the first two rounds in the Smith Fieldhouse.
Loyola Marymount (16-12, 9-8) won’t be in the tournament but can play spoiler on Tuesday. The first time BYU and LMU met this season was in Los Angeles on Oct. 21. The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Cougars rallied for a 3-2 victory, taking Set 5 15-11. Junior outside hitter Roni Jones-Perry, one of the favorites for WCC post-season honors, set a career mark with 34 kills in that match.
BYU leads the overall series with Loyola Marymount 24-8 and has won the past 12 matches with the Lions.
LMU is a young team led by sophomore Megan Rice (3.13 kills per set) and freshman Meredith Teague, who leads the conference in aces per set (.55). Senior libero Kristen Castellanos averages 3.79 digs per set, fifth in the WCC.
