AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — The University of Massachusetts has announced that American Express Co. Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Chenault will deliver the undergraduate commencement keynote address at graduation ceremonies in Amherst.

About 5,500 students are expected to receive degrees at the May 10 ceremony in McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

Chenault will also receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. Chenault joined American Express in 1981 and became president and chief operating officer in 1997. He assumed his current responsibilities as CEO in 2001, and later that year became chairman.

The graduate commencement ceremony is also scheduled for May 10 in the Mullins Center. About 1,200 candidates are expected to receive master's and doctoral degrees.
