Tulsa World staff explains their Bedlam picks

Eric Bailey

OU beat writer

The pick: OU, 38-31

The explanation: Oklahoma is at its best when doubted. OU enters this game as an underdog and that, combined with the No. 5 ranking in the CFP poll and the Bedlam rivalry, provides plenty of motivation. Something to note: Baker Mayfield is 12-0 as a starting quarterback playing in a true road game.

Mark Cooper

OSU beat writer

The pick: OU, 41-37

The explanation: Oklahoma State’s defense is playing better than Oklahoma’s, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the Cowboys win because of it. But OU’s run game makes the Sooners more balanced than any team OSU has faced. In a matchup where the quarterbacks are the big names, Rodney Anderson might steal the spotlight.

Guerin Emig

World columnist

The pick: OSU 41-38

The explanation: Gundy, realizing this is his last shot with Rudolph and those receivers, finally opens the throttle. That allows the Pokes to keep pace with Mayfield long enough for Matt Hockett (yes, Hockett) to kick the game-winning field goal.

Bill Haisten

World columnist

The pick: OU, 44-41

The explanation: Baker Mayfield is the best play-extending quarterback in college football. There are so many playmakers on each side, but it’s impossible to pick against Mayfield on a big stage like this.

Kelly Hines

TU beat writer

The pick: OSU, 38-34

The explanation: In a high-stakes meeting featuring equally impressive quarterbacks, the team with the better defense relies on turnovers to prevail.

Kendrick Marshall

OSU beat writer

The pick: OU, 42-40

The explanation: On paper, this is the most even Bedlam matchup in recent years. However, OU, like most seasons, deploys the quarterback who will ultimately make the difference.

Michael Peters

Sports Editor

The pick: OSU, 40-37

The explanation: Do you pick the best team (OSU) or the best player (Baker Mayfield)? I’ll go with the best defense on its home field.

Patrick Prince

Assistant sports editor

The pick: OU, 38-31

The explanation: OSU’s defense is surging, but its special teams unit has struggled. I’m picking OU because of Baker Mayfield — the best player of the field who tends to shine in big moments.

Cody Stavenhagen

OU beat writer

The pick: OU, 48-45

The explanation: Two high-powered offenses will live up to the billing, but it’s tough to pick against Baker Mayfield in November. Mayfield has a good shot at outdueling Mason Rudolph once again.

The Picker

The pick: OSU, 43-41

The explanation: The College Football Playoff Committee favors OU. Vegas favors OSU. So what should we think? Confused, the Picker says OSU by 2 (Plan B: OU by 11).

Straight up consensus: Oklahoma

Against the spread consensus: Oklahoma
