Lamar powers past Memorial into fourth round
The Lamar baseball team entered its Region III-6A quarterfinal series against Memorial averaging more than eight runs per game, with a low of six, even in the Texans’ lone defeat.
Lamar is still hitting the cover off the ball, now going into its first regional semifinal since 2011 after a 10-5, 11-5 sweep of the Mustangs, May 16-17 at Strake Jesuit.
The Texans will play Kingwood for a spot in the III-6A championship series.
Lamar set the tone early, scoring four in the first inning and five in the second for a 9-2 lead in game one. Ross Selvaggi doubled, homered and drove in three, while Sam Frank tripled with three RBIs.
Alexander Lopez tripled and scored twice. Jacob Doxakis and Chris Gutierrez doubled as part of a lineup that produced 13 extra-base hits in the series.
Joe Castillo earned with win with four solid innings as Gunner Gregg finished the final three, striking out four with one earned run.
Cole Vessels went five innings for the win in game two. Cameron Meisenbach pitched the final two innings to add to his double and two runs at the plate.
Brendan Cumming had the big bat in the series with six hits, highlighted by a double, triple and home run in game two.
Cyrus Twaddle was 4 for 5 with a triple, home run, three runs and three RBIs in the clincher.
District 18-6A champion Lamar improved to 31-5-2 for the season, defeating a state-ranked Memorial squad.
