Crews planted 90,000 sunflower seeds at Dix Park on Wednesday.

The City of Raleigh’s public utilities department first planted sunflowers in 2010 along the Neuse River Greenway Trail, where acres of bloomed between mid-June and early July. Last year, the city moved the sunflowers to Dix Park.

The field, off of Hunt Drive, became a popular place for people to take shots for Instagram. But the field also had a purpose. The city harvested the sunflowers to biodiesel, which was turned into fuel for tractors, trailers and farm equipment.

Look for the sunflowers to be at peak bloom in July.

To help get people ready for the sunflowers, Dix displayed thousands of daffodils in March.
