Sterling Newman High School December Student of the Month: Isaac Blaney
Isaac Blaney, 17, of Dixon, is Sterling Newman Central Catholic High School’s December Student of the Month. He is the son of Saad and Ashwaq Blaney, and he has a brother, Eli.
Favorite class: Calculus. We made it a tradition to brew tea before class every day.
Least-favorite class: Spanish. Not my mejor.
Favorite teacher: Chris Somers. He understands that an education is more than schooling.
School activities in which you participate: tennis, golf, Key Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Spanish Club, Newman Recycling Club, Kairos, Audio and Video Club, Student Council, National Honor Society, Science Club, Sacristan team, math team, Scholastic Bowl, Envirothon, musical and Model United Nations.
Civic, church, or other volunteer activities in which you participate: Altar server at St. Patrick Church, volunteer and member of the Auxiliary Board at KSB Hospital, and tour guide at the Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home.
Do you have a job? I work at the Emma Hubbs Tennis Courts in Dixon over the summer as a tennis instructor.
How would you describe your group of friends? Everybody has really strong ideals.
What will you do after high school? Probably go to college. That’s about as far as I’ve got so far.
What is something you learned in high school that you think you’ll never use? How to ask if I can go to the bathroom in Spanish.
If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be and why? I wish people in the stalls wouldn’t try to talk to me when I’m in the bathroom.
What is your advice for surviving high school? Get on the teacher’s good side, then turn on cruise control.
What do you do in your free time, outside of school activities? Either read a book or play on the Xbox with my friends.
What’s one thing in your life you can’t do without? My driver’s license.
What kind of music are you listening to? Anything from Mac Miller to Mozart.
What scares you? Bread.
If you could try any job for the day, what would it be? Google executive.
If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would it be? Greece.
What is your favorite childhood memory? Being 4-foot-6 so I can ride all of the “big boy” rides at Six Flags.
What is the best way to cheer you up? Driving around with no particular destination.
What is your life’s philosophy? Don’t wait for the right moment to start, start and make each moment right.
Is there anything else you want people to know about you? I can click really loudly with just my tongue and the roof of my mouth.
