Jr. Lady Aces advance to finals
OLNEY - The Mount Carmel Jr. Lady Aces will attempt to make it three straight trips to the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Class L championship tournament when they face Olney tonight at 7 p.m. in girls junior high basketball action.
In the semifinals, Mount Carmel defeated Carmi Saturday afternoon, 34-17. Olney defeated Flora also on Saturday to set up the championship contest.
The two teams have met twice this season with Olney winning both matchups en route to a 22-0 regular season record.
Taylor Singer led the way with seven field goals and 15 points for the Jr. Lady Aces. Kenley Drone hit five field goals and finished with 10 points
Braelyn Patton, Hayley Lang, Jordan Smith and Riley Riggs all scored two points, respectively, while Flynn Guard hit the scoring column with one point.
Mount Carmel opened the first quarter against Carmi with a 10-0 lead. The Jr. Lady Aces extended the lead to 18-2 at the break before breaking even in the third quarter (10-10) which was still good enough to give Mount Carmel a 28-12 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.
The winner from tonight will advance to Saturday morning’s quarterfinal. Tonight’s winner will face Du Quoin at 9:30 a.m. in Ina on the campus of Rend Lake College.
The Jr. Lady Aces are trying for its third straight Class L final eight appearance. The previous two seasons, Mount Carmel has walked away with a fourth-place finish.
