Ex-Gov. George Wallace Hospitalized

September 10, 1998

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) _ Former Gov. George Wallace was hospitalized today in critical condition from respiratory problems and a severe infection.

The 79-year-old Wallace was taken to Jackson Hospital by ambulance and admitted to the intensive care unit. Hospital spokeswoman Victoria Jones said doctors were treating Wallace with antibiotics and trying to determine the cause of his infection.

George Wallace Jr., who normally serves as the family spokesman when the former governor is hospitalized, was with his father and unavailable for comment.

Mrs. Jones said Wallace was suffering from acute respiratory distress when he arrived at the hospital.

Wallace was in the same hospital from July 29 to Aug. 2 for breathing difficulties.

The four-term governor suffers from Parkinson’s disease and had been paralyzed from the waist down since the 1972 assassination attempt while he was running for president. Numerous complications from the paralysis have sent him to the hospital over the years.
