Gary Hart Leaves Ireland After Three-Week Holiday

August 25, 1987

SHANNON, Ireland (AP) _ Gary Hart left Ireland today to return to the United States amid speculation over whether the one-time Democratic Party presidential front- runner might rejoin the race for the White House.

Hart flew out of Shannon Airport this afternoon on an Aer Lingus flight to New York after a three-week holiday. His son John left from the same airport two hours earlier on a flight to Boston and Chicago.

The former Colorado senator, flanked by airport security officers, refused to comment on speculation about his political future, telling reporters: ″I had a great time in Ireland, thank you very much.″

On Friday, Hart left a rented cottage in the fishing village of Oughterard to avoid reporters after a statement by his former campaign manager, Bill Dixon, said that it was ″likely″ the former senator would rejoin the presidential race.

Another former Hart adviser, Bill Shore, told The Des Moines Register he talked with Hart on the telephone last week and Hart was unequivocal about not returning to the race.

Hart was considered the front-runner in the crowded Democratic field when he quit the campaign May 8 after a newspaper reported he spent a weekend with actress-model Donna Rice.

After leaving the rented cottage in western Ireland, Hart and his son stayed with friends in Dublin and visited one of Ireland’s main tourist attractions, the Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary.
