LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Southern California man was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after authorities said he shot a 15-year-old dog and left it dead in a gutter.

Shane Dubyak was apprehended last week after leading sheriff’s deputies on a pursuit during which he threw a .22 revolver out of his vehicle, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A witness told investigators he saw man get out of an SUV, place something on the ground near the gutter and fire two gunshots in La Mirada on Jan. 5.

The witness later found a small terrier dead on a dog bed, officials said. The dog, which police said was at least 15 years old, had been shot twice, the newspaper reported.

Detectives identified Dubyak, 23, after reviewing surveillance video and receiving multiple tips from the public, officials said. It wasn’t known Monday if he has an attorney.

Dubyak could face charges including felony animal cruelty, evading arrest and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. His bail is set at $75,000.
