Vice President Mike Pence responded Thursday to criticism from Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg abouthis religion and views of LGBTQ people.

“I worked very closely with Mayor Pete when I was governor of the state of Indiana. He said some things that are critical of my Christian faith and about me personally. And he knows better. He knows me,” the Indiana Republican said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” show. Mr. Buttigieg is the mayor of South Bend, Indiana.

“But I get it. You know, 19 people running for president on that side in a party that’s sliding off to the left. And they’re all competing with one another for how much more liberal they are,” he continued.

The openly gay Mr. Buttigieg blasted Mr. Pence Sunday for his views on homosexuality, telling the vice president his marriage to a man has moved him “closer to God.”

“That’s the thing I wish the Mike Pences of the world would understand: That if you have a problem with who I am, your quarrel is not with me. Your quarrel, sir, is with my creator,” the Indiana Democrat said.

Mr. Pence responded that he and his family “have a view of marriage that’s informed by our faith.”

“And we stand by that, but that doesn’t mean that we’re critical of anyone else who has a different point of view,” he continued.
