Pit bull lovers pack courtroom for hearing on dog’s death
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — Pit bull lovers packed a Long Island courtroom for a hearing on the strangulation killing of a dog named Rex.
Rex, a pit bull, was choked to death in July by the owner of a shih tzu during a dogfight involving Rex, the shih tzu and a goldendoodle.
The shih tzu owner, Toquoc Huynh, appeared in Suffolk County court Thursday on a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty.
Huynh has pleaded not guilty. He says he choked Rex to get him to stop biting the goldendoodle.
The New York Times reports that pit bull fans shouted “murderer” and “animal killer” as Huynh left the courtroom.
The pit bull supporters want prosecutors to bring a more serious charge against Huynh. A spokeswoman for the Suffolk County district attorney’s office declined to comment.
