Missing upstate girl, 12, contacts family, says she’s OK
HUDSON FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — New York City police say a missing 12-year-old upstate girl has contacted her family and says she’s safe but insists she’s not returning home.
The NYPD says Friday that Malaya Johnson has been in touch with her family in Hudson Falls and says she’s “OK.” Her location remains unknown.
Police say 19-year-old George Torres of the Bronx was arrested Thursday on a charge of endangering the welfare of a minor.
Hudson Falls police say the girl used social media to connect with Torres.
Authorities say Malaya arranged for Torres to pick her up after school Wednesday and drive her to New York City. They say he left her at the Staten Island Ferry on Thursday.
Torres was being held at Washington County Jail. It’s not clear if he has an attorney who can speak for him.
