Field day for Wolves

April 8, 2019 GMT

CULVER — The name of the sport, after all, is track and field.

Michigan City’s boys and girls seem well-aware of that fact, and they’re making the most of their opportunities in events where, too often, few fans are paying attention.

Justin Wozniak and Meghan Miller certainly did Saturday, each setting a new meet record on a beautiful afternoon at the Culver Academies Relays.

Wozniak tossed a discus 173 feet, 2 inches to win that event by over 34 feet against teammate Ryan Stefanko. In the process, he shattered a 31-year-old meet record, 165-8, set by Plymouth’s Darren Wilder in 1988.

And Miller climbed over 10 feet in the girls’ pole vault, a height which marks her as a potential state qualifier. She erased the previous meet record of 9-6, set by La Porte’s Courtni Fryer in 2011.

Already Michigan City’s school record-holder, Miller’s winning height was the same as the first-place finisher in the boys’ competition. She just missed on attempts at a new school record of 10-7.

“This was a really nice reward for our kids who didn’t go away on Spring break,” said Wolves coach Lucas Snyder. “Meghan almost cleared 10-7, she had it, but slapped it off with her hand on the way down.

“And Wozniak, to see him getting that kind of mark this early, that’s encouraging. Those are some really nice (efforts) for this early in the season.”

As a team, Michigan City’s Spring-break challenged squads fared not too well in either the boys or girls’ standings. Michigan City’s boys finished fifth out of five teams in their competition, scoring 79 points.

City’s girls, meanwhile, were tied for fifth, scoring 38. Lowell’s girls and Marion’s boys claimed the team titles.

Understand, literally half the Wolves’ squads were missing, and there weren’t any Michigan City entries in several events.

“Obviously, if we had everybody, things would have been different, but I’m not going to tell kids not to go on vacations with their families,” said Snyder.

“I tell you what, for the kids who stayed, it was a fun week of practice. The kids who were there really wanted to be there, and it showed today.”

Besides winning the discus, Wozniak also took the shot put with a 47-11 effort.

Stefanko, the other half of City’s powerful boys weight duo, had a rough day. He finished 10th at the state finals in the discus last season, but Saturday, only reached 138-10. He later scratched out of the shot put.

“Ryan has some little things we have to clean up, but we’re not worried about it now,” said Snyder. “He just has to be ready at the end of May.”

Keeping with the field events theme, City’s Joseph Rice sailed 20-5 ¾ to win the long jump. Mondrella Glenn placed second in the rarely-contested triple jump.

Lydia Fuller finished third in the long jump, traveling 14-9.

On the track, the Wolves claimed a second-place finish in the boys 1,500-meter run thanks to Damian Albisu’s 4 minutes, 34.51 seconds. Rice recorded second in the 100-meter dash, timing 11.53.

City’s boys 4 x 100 relay was second and Christina Fitzpatrick was third in the 1,500.
