James ‘Jake’ Woods

James A. Woods “Jake,” 68, of Kankakee, passed away Saturday (March 9, 2019) at Landmark of Richton Park Nursing Home.

He was born Jan. 13, 1951, in Bolivar, Tenn., the son of Alexander and Alma Paige Woods. James married the former Marie Gant on July 13, 2013, in Kankakee.

Jake had been employed by and retired from Pepsi Cola Company after 40 years; he also was employed at Cypress Tap and the Party House. He was an Eastside Football coach for many years and a foster parent to many. Jake enjoyed cooking, bowling and shooting pool. He was a longtime member of Second Baptist Church, where he served as an usher and the church van ministry, to name a few.

Surviving are his wife, Marie Gant-Woods, of Kankakee; sons, Dana Woods and Terell Woods, both of Kankakee; daughters, Adrian Woods, of Kankakee, Marie (Reggie) Benson, of Memphis, Tenn., April Williams, of Minneapolis, Minn., Kevina Gant and Khiera Gandy, both of Kankakee; sister, Glynda (Hayward) Vincent, of Bolivar, Tenn.; two aunts, Betty Marshall, of Kankakee, and Nicey Herron, of Bolivar, Tenn.; sisters-in-law, Mary Gant, of Kankakee, and Mary Louise Elmore, of Chicago; brothers-in-law, Robert (Regina) Gant, of Chicago, and Richard Minor, of Starkville, Miss.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; god-daughter, Ashaki Grant, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Gaston Harvey; sister, Girtha Woods; and several aunts and uncles.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 15, at Jones Funeral Home in Kankakee. An additional time for visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday, March 16, until the 10 a.m. funeral service at the Second Baptist Church in Kankakee. Pastor Tyler J. Prude will officiate. Interment will be in Mound Grove Gardens of Memory, Kankakee.
