Hot shooting carries Luther Prep over Berlin
BERLIN — Grace Schmidt scored 17 points and Lauren Paulsen supplied 13 as the Luther Prep girls basketball team saw a 25-point lead shrink to seven in the second half before defeating host Berlin 61-51 in a nonconference game on Saturday.
Naomi Bridgemen tallied 11 points and made three 3-pointers. Abbie Burke contributed 10 points for the Phoenix.
“They came out in a 1-3-1 (defense) with a big lineup,” Luther Prep head coach Mark Schroeder said. “The girls were patient and worked the ball around. I was happy with the patience we exerted to wait for the good shots. Grace was able to gain some attention inside when the ball was swinging around. Naomi and Lauren knocked down some big 3’s.”
Luther Prep (5-4) led by 10 points at halftime and hit the necessary foul shots to stave off Berlin’s rally.
“We talked about playing smarter defense and not reaching,” Schroeder said. “The girls did a great job on help-side defense stepping in and forcing them to kick it out. They closed out on the kick. It was a lot smarter basketball.”
Ally Goba had seven points for the Phoenix and Paulsen made three shots from beyond the arc.
Luther Prep made nine 3-pointers which bodes well moving forward in the season.
“It showed our team what kind of basketball we can play and what we can do if we can keep people honest from the outside,” Schroeder said.
Myah Jodarski totaled 25 points and Maddy Naparalla chipped in nine for Berlin (7-2).
Luther Prep hosts Lake Mills on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019.
