Mariners Pregame: M’s chasing wildcard spot, lineups and starters against New York Yankees

Game 129: Seattle Mariners (65-63) at New York Yankees (68-58) at 4:05 p.m. at Yankee Stadium.

The Mariners were off on Thursday after a series win over the Atlanta Braves, including a 9-6 win on Wednesday as the recently recalled Taylor Motter delivered a two-run single in the eighth inning.

The status of second baseman Robinson Cano remains uncertain. He underwent an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) exam on Thursday after leaving Wednesday’s game in Atlanta because of tightness in his left hamstring. Manager Scott Servais called Cano day-to-day and he is not in Friday’s starting lineup.

The M’s are a half-game out of the second wildcard spot in the A.L. behind Minnesota. They are 6-4 in thier last 10 games and 31-31 on the road.

The Yankees are 4 1/2 games out of first in the A.L. East and own the first wildcard spot, 3 1/2 games ahead of the Twins and 4 games up on the Mariners. They are 7-3 in their last 10 games and 35-22 at home.

Transactions: The Mariners outrighted OF Leonys Martin to AAA Tacoma. Martin, 29, was designated for assignment on August 23. He hit .174 (20 for 115) with 12 runs, two doubles, a triple, three home runs and eight RBI in 34 games with Seattle this season.
