CINCINNATI (AP) _ Tom Robson, a bench coach for the New York Mets last season, was hired Tuesday as the Cincinnati Reds’ hitting coach.

Robson, 56, served as the Mets’ hitting coach from 1997 to 2000 and in 2001 was a special assistant to Mets general manager Steve Phillips.

Robson previously was with the Texas Rangers, serving from 1986 to 1988 as assistant hitting coach and from 1989 to 1992 as hitting coach.

In Cincinnati, he replaces Jim Lefebvre, who resigned Sept. 28 as hitting coach. Lefebvre had joined the Reds for 2002 after spending two years conducting hitting clinics abroad for major league baseball.
